Since this past summer, a team has been working alongside Heath Davis to prayerfully refine our vision for discipleship at Hayward Wesleyan Church. While the work is ongoing, the Lord has united this team around a few short-term priorities that we believe will help shape us into the kind of people God is calling us to be as a church.
One of those priorities is a renewed emphasis on the spiritual discipline of sharing meals together.
Sharing meals is one of the earliest and most meaningful practices of the Church. In Acts 2:46 we read, “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” Eating together is about more than food — it’s about sharing life, building relationships, and growing as the Body of Christ. In the same way food sustains us physically, meaningful connection sustains us spiritually.
Between now and the end of May, we are intentionally giving extra attention to this practice as a church.
Here’s the invitation:
- Who is someone you could invite over for dinner?
- Meet for coffee?
- Grab lunch together?
We’re not only encouraging this personally, but also within the ministries and groups you’re already part of:
- Small group leaders — could you intentionally plan a shared meal?
- Ministry teams — how might a meal fit naturally into what you’re already doing?
We’re already seeing this come to life. Through Followers meals, at Celebrate Recovery each Tuesday, and through church potlucks and cookouts.
So here’s the question we’re asking each of you to consider:
How will you incorporate the practice of sharing meals into your context?
We’d love to hear your stories. If you’ve shared a meal, hosted a gathering, or found a meaningful way to live this out, please email us at ryan@hwc.church so we can celebrate what God is doing among us.
